What Should I do First?
Prior to beginning any form of behaviour management, there are a few things you should consider. These include:
Self Evaluation Checklist:
A self evaluation checklist can be used as an accountability measure. This is to ensure that you as the teacher has done everything in your power to manage any problematic behaviours from occurring in your classroom. Below is an example of questions that may be on a self-evaluation checklist.
1. Does my classroom have no more than 5 simple rules?
2. Are these rules visible?
3. Did the students have any input when formulating these rules?
4. Do the students understand these rules?
5. Are the rules commonly referred to?
6. Are there clear consequences for breaking these rules?
7. Do the students understand these consequences?
8. Did the students have any input when formulating these consequences?
9. Do I always follow through with these consequences?
10. Do I acknowledge and praise students who are behaving appropriately?
11. Are there positive consequences for appropriate behaviour?

Behaviour Management Plan:
A behaviour management plan is a must-have for any classroom. It provides a clear outline of the steps you will take to manage and control behaviour. This includes the types of behaviours that may occur, the strategies you will employ, the support you can access and the consequences you will enact.
The behaviour management plan should not just be created and then tossed aside. It needs to be something you continually familiarise yourself with. It can be adjusted if need be, but it should be something you follow.
The behaviour management plan should be available to other staff members to ensure that they are aware of the classrooms rules and expectations. It can also be accessible to parents / guardians and students.
Below is an example of a behaviour management plan you can use within your classroom:
(remember, this will need to be adjusted to suit your students needs)
